The Two Men Who Count

According to the Scriptures, in the sight of God, only two men count. They are Adam, the first man on this planet and the Lord Jesus Christ, whom the apostle Paul calls, "The Last Adam"
1 Corinthians 15:45.

Your eternal destiny and welfare depends upon which of these two Adams you identify yourself with.

There are many similarities and contrasts between these two Adams. Let us consider six.

1. Both men came into this world in absolutely unique ways. Adam was created directly by God: "And the Lord God formed man of the dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" - Genesis 2:7. However, following Adam's sin and rebellion, God pronounced judgment upon him, saying, "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return" - 3:19. Death would see man eventually returning to the basic chemical elements (dust) from which he had been originally created.
The Last Adam was born of 'the virgin'. Joseph was
NOT the father of the infant Jesus. No man was the father! The black-and-white statements of Scripture are unambiguous. "That which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit" -Matthew 1:20. The virgin birth meant that He did not partake of our sinful, fallen nature. "That holy Thing Which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God" - Luke 1:35. Among the teeming millions that have been born during the history of this planet, the man Jesus is unique: virgin born!

2. Both Adams had to do with the great question of sin. It was the First Adam who brought sin and its accompanying miseries to every one of us. "By one man sin entered into the world ... all have sinned" -- Romans 5:12. Every sorrow, every tear, every pain, every death can be traced back to this Adam. "The whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now" - Romans 8:22.

The Last Adam, as we have already said, was intrinsically holy.
"He did no sin" - 1 Peter 2:22.
"He knew no sin" - 2 Corinthians 5:21
"In Him is no sin" - I John 3:5.

The sinless Last Adam "came into the world to save sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15) by presenting His spotless life as a sacrifice for sins. He has "appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" - Hebrews 9:26.

3. Both Adams are linked with a
tree. The first Adam, disobedient to the command of God, took the fruit from 'the tree of knowledge of good and evil', and in so doing, brought sin and death into God's fair creation. "By one man sin entered into the world and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men" - Romans 5:12. The great River of Death that moves relentlessly on, carrying multitudes of men and women out of time and into eternity, can be traced back to its source: the wilful disobedience of Adam in connection with
